![]() ![]() A voxel artist is a type of artist that makes voxel art by creating 3D models made entirely out of voxels using a software called a voxel editor. The neat thing about voxel art is that any one can become a voxel creator, also known as a voxel artist. This chicken was actually made of several voxels, that in the end were colored to look like a typical chicken. If you look at the main character, the chicken, you’ll notice the sharp edges of where a voxel ends. ![]() A great example of this is the mobile hit game Crossy Road. When combined an artist is able to create 3D models that can be used for artwork and animation. So what exactly is voxel art? Its actually the art of combining and coloring voxels. While you can certainly see its height and width, the other thing that is very clear is it has depth as well. A voxel on the other hand would be something like a cardboard box. You can see its height and width but really there is no depth to that sheet of paper. So if we were to translate this in the real world a pixel would be similar to a square piece of paper. This also gives the voxel volume, in the sense that it is not just a 2D square in a grid like a pixel, but rather a 3D cube in a three dimensional grid. The difference though, is that a voxel has an extra axis, the Z-axis, that allows it to be positioned in three dimensional space. Also a voxel has an exact position inside of a grid just like a pixel has an exact position inside of a picture. For starters a voxel can only contain a single color at a time just like a pixel can only have a single color. This is important because it has many of the same similarities as pixels in 2D graphics. ![]() This is very similar to a pixel in two-dimensional space. In this beginner MagicaVoxel tutorial you will learn how to create voxel art for your games and projects using the MagicaVoxel editor! We will cover everything from creating a voxel model to sharing it with the world!Īre you ready to create your own voxel art? Whether you want to make something to share on your Instagram account or maybe you need a hero for your video game, this MagicaVoxel tutorial will help get you creating voxel art fast with MagicaVoxel.Voxel Art and Pixel Art Similarities and Differences Voxel art is a fast and easy way to create 3D models for your games or for creative works like in the pictures you see on Mega Voxels! This is one of the reasons so many people love using voxels. MagicaVoxel is the clear favorite for making voxel art because of its many features but most importantly, its Free! Now there are many tools available for building voxel art, but in this tutorial we will be using the most popular voxel editor available on the web. This tutorial uses MagicaVoxel 0.99.6 or newer. If you need help installing MagicaVoxel, view our previous tutorial How to Install MagicaVoxel. 3d character modelling magicavoxel how to# There you can find a step by step tutorial on getting MagicaVoxel running on your computer. Once you have MagicaVoxel installed, go ahead and open up the application. Now at first the UI will look a little intimidating. As I mentioned before MagicaVoxel has dozens of different features and tools for making voxel art look great. We’ll take it slow however and by the time we’re done you’ll feel right at home. So to start off lets break down what all of theses windows are for in the picture above. 3d character modelling magicavoxel windows# ![]() Color Palette: The window to the left is your color palette. In this window you can choose from a wide variety of colors. Brush: The second window from the left is the Brush window. What makes it even nicer is the ability to add your own custom colors at the bottom. This is where you can choose your brush mode. Some of the modes you can pick include Voxel (V), Face (F), Box (B), Line (L), Center (C) and Pattern (P). In addition to that, you can also pick an action for the brush such as Attach, Erase, Paint and Move. View: This window is located below the Brush window. Here you can quickly toggle the current display options such as Display Ground (DG), Display Shadow (SW), Display Background (BG), Display Grid (Grid), Display Edge (Edge) and Display Frame (Frame). Editor: The window right in the middle is where you will build all your voxel creations!
